Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

(OP)
I've spent quite some time on a design now, and just as I was finishing up my assembly, things have started getting buggy, and as soon as I try to fix one problem, 2 or 3 new problems arise. I've got lines and planes that are rotating on me. I draw a horizontal line that should intersect another line in another plane and now it's off. When I open the drawing of the other line the plane has actually rotated a few degrees!

Is it possible that solidworks files can get buggy like this and corrupt themselves???

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

It's software, so anything is possible.
Do you have relationships/mates that are causing the problems? It could be one simple mate/relationship issue that is throwing everything off.

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

This type of problem is endemic to less-than-legal installations of SW.

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

It is one or both of Jeff's and Tick's suggestions.

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

Less than legal as in bootleg?

I have loaded my licensed copy of SW08 and updated to SP1.0 and it is doing some funky stuff. I can't explode an assembly w/o it crashing; I haven't been able to get a partial section to work as yet; lines drawn within the sheet don't always seem to get drawn in the same plane. Acclimating to the new UI is one thing (and so far I like the new layout) but the bugs are a drag.

Not say that bootleg software isn't a problem but perhaps alformious has similar problems?

You may need to reinstall. Make sure virus software is turned off.

Virus was off (as always) but I"ll try it anyway. Are you suggesting that I re-download from the site or just re-install using what is on my hard drive?

Do you have the original DVD?

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

I've seen some posts where SP1.0 is causing people grief. Were you having these problems with SP0.0? If not, I'd do a clean install of SP0.0 and not upgrade to SP1.0.

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

I've heard similar complaints over the years that the software has a mind of its own, and will change models whenever it feels like it.  I've come to understand that the problem is not the software, but rather at that interface point between keyboard and screen.  peace

There is probably some relation (automatic relation or in-context) that is causing the errant behavior.  As Alformious speaks of lines and planes, it seems the problem could be improper use of 2D sketches when a 3D sketch might work better.

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

My appologies to alformious. I didn't intend to take over the thread. I didn't use '08 as we had a customer request that we wait to upgrade until SP1. When I installed I used the disc then down loaded the SP never having tried the software at 0.0. The models I'm working with were generated in SW07 SP5.0 and worked fine.

Thanks for the input. Further thoughts?

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

I uninstalled, did a clean install, blah, blah, blah, and it still crashed. When I installed SW08 I also updated my SpacePilot drivers and installed the updates for my add-in. For kicks I un-installed my add-in. No more crash. Reinstalled and crash is back. I've emailed my rep....

Thanks again.

TheTick and ctopher I don't appreciate that kind of insinuation. I can assure you it's a legal copy. Even if it wasn't a legal copy, do you think that the software pirates rewrote the code just to mess people 10 hours into their work?

My thought on this is that I put in too many relationships one on top of the other, planes built on dots and lines and more planes dependent of those etc etc. I went too far and now I should start over, fresh slate, and more efficient use of top down design.

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

You don't have to appreciate it or resent it.  Just checking in on the most likely suspects first.

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

If you see things moving from their placement, this really sounds like in-context relations causing the movement.  So are these parts dependent on relationships created in assemblies?  If so, that's probably the culprit (as it sounds).  Be careful with these things--they can certainly cause confusion and trouble--only sometimes you don't find out until much later in the design state.  Takes some practice.

I often create features, etc. borrowing from things in an assembly and then delete those relationships when the design is a bit more anchored so I don't get any unwanted edits.  Also, mating parts to "absolutes" within an assembly (such as planes instead of surfaces or edges) can also reduce such behavior, since you'll have greater stability of placement with these methods (edits of a part or feature won't necessarily move other parts around).

Good luck.

alformious,
I was just asking if you have the DVD, then to help you with the next step to do a fix. If this upset you, you must be quilty of something.
I'm done here.
Good luck.

Ok here's a new one. I created a sketch of a circle, then extrude up to vertex with thin feature. What do I get? Square tubing instead of round?!?!?

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

(OP)
I can even show you the picture. At this point I'm just laughing it off. It's friday. I'm gonna go quit my job now :)

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

its definately related to my assembly. i started just a single new part and extrude a circle no prob. in the assembly i tried a random new part extrude circle, it makes a square tube. hmmmm... resolution issue? how to fix?

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

Have you checked the image quality of the assembly under document properties? What happens if you increase it?

RE: Solidworks files corrupting themselves?

HA!  I've not had that one before.  Weirdest I've ever had was ten years ago--a model of a monitor was actually oriented differently from its own shaded view (like 90 degrees), so everything about that model was corrupted--had to start over.
