Roller Chain Connection

Roller Chain Connection

Roller Chain Connection

(OP)
I need to use roller chain to operate a mechanism over a 41 inches center to center distance. Speed is almost negligible, but the force of operation is high. My center distance is fixed with no room for adjustment of chian tension. I will like to be able to find some adaptor for connecting the chain so that I can use the adaptor for tensioning the chain. I will prefer a bolt connection for the adjustment but I am open to any ideas now. Please help.

Thanks

RE: Roller Chain Connection

You can't change the length except in integer pitch increments.  Otherwise the chain can't pass over the sprockets its connection point.  You can get single-pitch increments by removing link pairs or by using a "half link" to connect the ends.

You might also consider the floating block type of tensioner that clamps at the middle of the loop.  Take a look at page 986 in the McMaster catalog:

Thanks Eromlignod. I have already checked the Mcmaster tensioner and its too bulky for my application. I dont have the space. My chain is not going to run continuous. I am only going to be moving back and forth over a 180° angle.

How about a turnbuckle at one end?

Can't use an idle for tension?

Thanks a lot for your responses. The turnbuckle seems like a nice idea. I just have to find a size which will work with a size 40 chain.
Thanks again guys.
