Can anyone recomend a device that i can sit on an RS485 link to monitor the packets of data being transferred and show them on a laptop/pc
thanks

RE: comms analysis

Check out the family of serial monitor software available from HHD software at
http://www.hhdsoftware.com/Family/serial-monitor.html

"You can log and analyze serial connection by establishing a virtual link (Serial Bridge) between two distinct serial devices and monitor this virtual connection starting from Serial Monitor Standard Edition."

A PC's COM port is RS-232.  You mention your physical link is RSW-485, so at some point  you'll have to either put a card in the PC that is native RS-485 or go through a 232/485 converter.
