Measurement of Radial Loading

Measurement of Radial Loading

Measurement of Radial Loading

(OP)
I am looking for a way to measure radial loading in a bearing on one of our products.  Tried searching for general info, but not very helpful.  I have litte to no room to modify current assembly to make it easier to get readings.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

RE: Measurement of Radial Loading

What type of bearing?

Echoing Tmoose - and in addition for what purpose and application? Possible to place loading cells or strain gauge (strain gage)?

RE: Measurement of Radial Loading

and...how much room is not very much?

RE: Measurement of Radial Loading

Texas A&M is doing work with Fiber optic strain gauges for that purpose. Check out the attached paper for more info, and contact my friend Andy Conkey (one of the authors) he is looking for applications....

It is a double row spherical roller bearing in a USAF housing.  The reason that their is no room for modification is that these bearings are in a machine in the field, which must maintain the foot to center distance, their is no room to put a gauge between the bearing and mount surfaces.  The application is a tub grinder.

RE: Measurement of Radial Loading

This information should be available from the application
engineer who recommended that particular bearing according to the information and loads provided to him. Examining all of the load conditions thrust and moment can then be converted into a radial component based on the angle of the rollers based on the mean of the cup and cone angle.

RE: Measurement of Radial Loading

Stick a matrix of strain gauges on it and then correlate with an FEA model.

...or correlate to known forces applied while unit is stopped.
