Research Paper Database Software

Research Paper Database Software

(OP)
OK, I've been tasked with selecting software for our research group and would like to have opinions and recommendations from folks here.

We do a specific kind of research and there are literally thousands of journal and conference papers out there. We have many of these papers, but the problem is management. In other words, being able to share and find the papers. Currently, three of us just have pdfs on or individual computers and some of the papers printed out in one of the offices.

We'd like to purchase some simple software to help manage these papers. We're not sure if we should try to have the database online so that it can be updated faster, or if it should be on one local computer and updated every 3 months or whatever. In the latter case, whenever a new grad student comes on board, we could print off a CD and give to him or her. I think we're ok with either option and would probably go with whichever is cheaper and easier to implement.

We'd like to be able to search by author, keyword, specific words in the text, title, or abstract, etc.--typical search engine stuff.

The software must be pretty easy to use because it's not like we have a person dedicated to such a task. One of the grad students will have to be able to figure it out fast and get it up and running.

I have googled the subject, but I someone here surely deals with a software package that does this task and can offer recommendations.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Research Paper Database Software

Hi there:

I do believe that you need to go with an SQL type database.

Even in MS Access you could get going something simple and maintain it on your own.

Everything is in an *.MDB file which can be shared among the users once it gets updated.

Good luck!

Thanks,
