TIG Calculations

TIG Calculations

TIG Calculations

(OP)
I'm a vehicle design engineer, and I'm trying to do some weld calculations for some suspension components that need to be TIG welded.  Unfortunately, the only calculations I can find in my test books are for arc welding.  Are there any books/resources I can find calculations for TIG welding, or are the calculations for stick welding the same?

Thanks for the help

RE: TIG Calculations

MStiller;
What type of calculations - cost, deposition rates, strength, etc., ????

RE: TIG Calculations

(OP)
Oh yeah, probably should have mentioned that.  I'm concerned mainly with the strength of the weld, and I'd like to get a better idea of which weld rod to use.  We're going to be welding 4130, and I've been told that I have a few options of filler rod, mainly a ER70,ER08, or a 4130, but I'd just like more info on the difference in the weld characteristics for each.

Thanks

RE: TIG Calculations

MStiller;
If you need information on welding characteristics regarding GTAW filler metals for low alloy steels, I would strongly suggest you review AWS SFA 5.28. This filler metal specification contains all of the necessary information regarding chemistry and strength properties.

For 4130, you need to determine the base metal strength, which will be contingent upon the heat treatment condition that you specified for the application. For example, you can have annealed 4130 or it can be ordered to a specific heat treatment condition for desired strength properties.

Once the heat treatment condition is known, you can select a filler metal from SFA 5.28 to match the base metal strength properties. Once this process is completed, now you can evaluate weld joint details - fillet weld or partial penetration groove weld or full penetration groove weld, etc. to assure adequate load carrying capacity of the component.

Metengr:

I looked up AWS A5.28 on the AWS website, and that standard is for Gas Shielded Arc Welding, not GTAW.  Given that we are TIG-welding, is there a specific specification for GTAW of Low Alloy Steels, or does the GSAW spec work as well?

Thanks for the help

RE: TIG Calculations

You obviously did not read the scope of the specification. This specification applies to GTAW, GTAW is gas shielded arc welding, just like GMAW and PAW. The SFA 5.28 specification is for bare, solid wire.
