Can carbon steel be used for a non-pressure vessel application for an exhaust muffler that will see an ambient of -67F?  During run, the gas temperature will be 850F.   Maximum back pressure will be 10" w.c. The unit will be 30" diameter x 352" long and mounted horizontally.
I am told ASTM standards "do not allow" the use of astm steel, normalized or not for this kind of application, no matter how well supported the horizontal unit will be and no matter how good the expansion joints are.
Some tell me that we have to build a code vessel.   Is this true for an exhaust system?

RE: -67F Carbon Steel muffler

This has been answered in another forum. NO, you don't have to build a code vessel.
