Nickel alloys for CO2 corrosion

Nickel alloys for CO2 corrosion

Nickel alloys for CO2 corrosion

(OP)
I can't find any information on the suitability of nickel alloys (Inconel, Incoloy, Hastelloy) in CO2 corrosion. Is this because this combination is a big no-no, or is it because people usually do not use this combination?

We have wet CO2, wet H2S and chlorides in the water so I have ruled out austenitic stainless steels and 410SS.

RE: Nickel alloys for CO2 corrosion

Nickel base alloys are used when the concentration of the constituents that you have named are high enough and the temperature is high enough. Alloys' C-276, 622, 686, etc.  have been used. Duplex stainless and ferritic stainless steels has also proved effective depending on concentration(s) and temperature. We try to pick the most economical material for the service conditions.

RE: Nickel alloys for CO2 corrosion

Jason,

Nickel alloys are resistant to CO2 "sweet" corrosion. Usually in the Oil & Gas the alloys used are the Alloy 825 or Alloy 625. If you have also H2S then you have to follow the requirements  of NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 that gave application limits for CRA (corrosion resistant alloys) in terms of Chlorides, temperature partial pressure of H2S and presence of elemental sulfur.
here you can find some paper:

hope this help
