Welding Incoloy 825 and 316 stainless steel

Welding Incoloy 825 and 316 stainless steel

(OP)
Is it acceptable to weld Incoloy 825 to 316 together?  I know that's a broad term, but any information would be appreciated.  Can anyone offer any advice on, or references for welding disimilar metals like this?

RE: Welding Incoloy 825 and 316 stainless steel

This type of weld can be done and is done using a Ni-base filler metal. Heat input during welding is important as well as joint cleanliness. I would recommend you visit the Special Metals web site below, and review their technical information on welding/joining;

They are frequently welded together with E/ERNiCrMo-3. Other nickel base alloy filler metals are also employed.

this publication from Nickel Institute can give you some good advice on dissimilar welding.

14018 - GUIDELINES FOR WELDING DISSIMILAR METALS (1991)
By Richard E. Avery, reprinted from Chemical Engineering Progress, May 1991. Nickel-containing stainless steels and nickel- and copper-base alloys are readily fusion welded to carbon and low-alloy steel and to each other. Methods are described to estimate the weld metal composition of dissimilar-metal welds. Knowing the composition, weld properties can be predicted for a wide range of dissimilar-metal welds.

hope this help
