39NiCrMo3 Equivalent Steel

39NiCrMo3 Equivalent Steel

39NiCrMo3 Equivalent Steel

(OP)
I have an Italian print that calls out a material of 39NiCrMo3.  Do you know what an equivalent US steel would be for this material?  I have seen on the web that some manufacturers will say that AISI9840 is the same but it seems as if this steel isn't commonly used in the US.

The part is a gib that is used on a spindle mounting.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

RE: 39NiCrMo3 Equivalent Steel

It does meet SAE 9840, which is not an active standard anymore. The typical Ni content is above 8640 but below 4340 as far as standard SAE grades are concerned.

RE: 39NiCrMo3 Equivalent Steel

If you are looking for a commonly available material, the you should use 4340.  It is not an equivalent, but it is a suitable alternative.

Cory
