Al Casting alloys

Al Casting alloys

Im after info on available aluminium casting alloys in Australia.  Google hasnt been of much use, Sims metals have given 4 alloys, but no data sheets or specifications.

I need to choose an alloy for model racing engine crankcases.

Strength, Stability, and crack resistance are high priorities.

Was told it couldnt be done, so
i went and did it!

RE: Al Casting alloys

AA 356-T6 is as good a place to start as any, and is a fairly common alloy. Sand cast is 30,000 psi min tensile. How big is this engine crankcase? Perhaps a CNC hog out of billet might be more feasible.

Swall,  I keep reading about 356 T6, but to cross reference to whats available in Australia has been a fruitless search.

CNC would be ideal, but not having one myself, yet, and the lowish numbers to be produced make it too expensive per piece.

AA 365 is known as AC601 (primary alloy) or DA601 (secondary alloy) in Australia, and is standardized in AS 1874 Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Ingots and castings.

Exellent Corypad!

Now the difference in primary and secondary?

RE: Al Casting alloys

Primary means it was produced directly from aluminum-containing ore (bauxite) while secondary means it has been produced from recycled metal.  Secondary generally has higher impurity levels (iron, zinc, etc.) which probably won't be an issue for your application.  Most automotive blocks are now cast with secondary metal.

Thankyou once again.

Does anyone know where i can locate a listing of casting alloys?  i dont want to settle for the first i see, as there maybe something more suited.   Even Al/Li  ???
