Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

(OP)
Hi,

IT here do not want to install v20 yet, if at all as they fear v21 will be out soon, based on what has gone before I can see their point... It's only 30 seats, but hey who's counting.

Is it possible to install v19 and v20 along side each other so we can asses the new features in v20 to see if we can push IT into upgrading all the systems.

Cheers,

M

RE: Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

Yes there is.

Read the help files and you'll have to know a bit about msi scripting.  It's actually pretty easy.

Warnings:
Not all features are available with a multi-install.
It is very easy to accidentally open up a file in the wrong version.  And, with no roll-back ability, it will be stuck in the new version.  Please an icon for "make version current" on your Desktop and don't double-click files to open them.
Some things may seem buggy with multi-installs whereas they work fine otherwise.

RE: Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

Hi,

do not expect V21 before September next year ... For dual
install check the section 'Silent install' in the Readme.txt
that comes with V20 (for V19 you'll find ist inside V19's
program folder (Readme.html).
Switching between versions with makevercurr will work but
MarkUp & View will be affected. Also some external Addons
may not work properly.
When you have changed the template's folder location in:

HKLM\Software\Unigraphics Solutions\Solid Edge\Vxx\TemplatePath

then be warned that makevercurr will set it back to point to
the default location within the install directory.

And, as Swertel already pointed out: a file once opened in
V20 and *saved* will stay in V20 format -- no way back.

I've had no problems so far (V16 - V20 all installed on one
PC)

RE: Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

We've had the problem of someone putting V19 on their machine when we were still V18 and screwing things up!

Is putting V20 on a standalone machine an option?  This is what we did when evaluating V18, stuck it on a laptop.

May not be easy with some of the licence changes.  When we evaluated V19 a few months back we used a machine on the network and a few files accidently got opened in 19 and saved.  Be very carefull with this.

KENAT, probably the least qualified checker you'll ever meet...

RE: Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

Just a thought... I've read some threads on the UGS forums about virtualization. With a software like VirtualPC (now free from Microsoft), you can install another Windows within, and then any application you want. The advantage is that anything in the virtual environment is contained, and cannot affect your actual OS with installed software. Of course you have to live with a performance hit.

But I have no idea if it can work with a network licence...

RE: Running v19 and v20 along side each other...

Does anyone know what performance loss to expect when using virtual pc to install multiple versions? We are looking into it, but have not yet tested the performance...
