Experience with A.B. soild state OL relay?

Experience with A.B. soild state OL relay?

Does anyone have experience (good/bad) with an Allen Bradley solid state OL relay (Cat 592)? I was looking for an adjustable  Ol relay to retofit to a size 2 509 starter, and in passing the local A.B. rep. said that they have never sold one. Seemed pricey at $350.00 a pop. I dont remember ever seeing a 509 with other than heaters.

RE: Experience with A.B. soild state OL relay?

Wow, have you got the wrong AB guy!
Of course they make them to retrofit, I don't think the 509 starter has changed significantly in 25+ years and they sell them now. All of their "smart MCCs" use the E3 or E1 OL relays, so how would they be able to do that if it didn't fit?

At $350 you were likely looking at the E3 which is the top-line version; the E1 is much less expensive if all you want is an SSOL.

I know all this and I'm a competitor to AB. You need to find a better AB source (or switch brands wink).

Thanks for the reply- I understood after talking with the rep that there was a retrofit, but after he told me he'd never sold one (fairly large rep in a fairly large metro area) I was wondering was there some sort a reliability issue- in my travels I didnt remember running across any yet.

Competitor or not, nobody attains the position they enjoy in the marketplace by making junk. Even if they did have a production problem at one time or another, I would seriously doubt it remained unattended to for any length of time.

In general, Size 5 starters are less numerous in every way compared to smaller versions. So unless you are an OEM or end-user who uses a lot of large motors, you are not likely see them very often.
