3 Gb switch

3 Gb switch

3 Gb switch

(OP)
Hi Folks, just upgraded my Dell M90 from 2GB to 4GB (ram), simply put , how do i switch it from 2 to 3 GB? Or is this done automatcally. Been to the Autodesk site, but its not that clear exactly what to do.

Thanks in advance

RE: 3 Gb switch

Hi
Do not understand what you want to switch. If you mean virtual memory it will depend what OS you are running

Hi Clive, yes i mean virtual memory, OS is XP.
Cheers

RE: 3 Gb switch

Sorry for delay. I am on the cursed Vista here. I have XP at home

Its pretty simple but I will run through it tonight

RE: 3 Gb switch

On mine I go START,control panel, performance and maintenance, system.
This brings up the system properties panel. There are other ways of getting there. Whichever suits you best.
Pick the advanced tab, performance settings advanced tab again and at the bottom is virtual memory

Click on change and fill in initial and maximum memory with what is recommended.I put the same value in each box Press set or it will not hold. Press ok to get out and you will be away

You will have to restart the computer

Hope this helps

Clive

RE: 3 Gb switch

Azum,

There is a method of modifying the Boot.ini file that allows a 32bit operating system to utilize 3/4 of the systems memory rather than half (someone correct my definition if I am wrong). A 32bit OS can only use 2gigs of 4gigs total for programs normally, after activating the 3GB switch you can utilize 3gigs of 4gigs total. All you are changing is the size of the page file (how much of the hard drive is used to swap files when the physical RAM is used up) which will help but is not what th OP is asking about.

No, I don't know how to enable this so I can't talk you though it.

Thanks to you both, i have changed to Clives instructions, now going try some hard core Inventor drawings / presentations, and hopefully keep the 'rev' counter out of the red.

RE: 3 Gb switch

If you are working with larger assys or complex parts, increasing the VM size will help, but if still more RAM (physical or virtual) is needed, the /3GB switch will help even more.

The following article was produced by Ed Eaton for SolidWorks users, but is equally effective for many Windows programs.

http://kcswug.com/documents/articles/3gb_switch_part_one,_two,_&_three.pdf

Note: 3GB of physical RAM is NOT required to be installed for this switch to be effective. I have used this switch on systems with only 512MB RAM.
Also note that this will NOT increase speed, but will help processes requiring more memory to complete their task.

cheers
