Hydro electric dam data

Hydro electric dam data

Hydro electric dam data

(OP)
I need to be directed to web sites with info on drainage basin volume above dam, stream flow records and dam construction data for a small hydroelectric plant on the housatonic river in the Berkshire of Massachusetts.

RE: Hydro electric dam data

you will need to contact your state dam safety agency to get the information, but I wouldn't expect to find this online.
It may be possible to find stream flow records on USGS website

RE: Hydro electric dam data

If this is an existing dam, the owner/manager of the project would have that data.  It must be furnished to FERC for the license.

I will not get much help from the owner, however, the FERC license will be a good avenue to follow. Thanks to the responders.

RE: Hydro electric dam data

Once you have the info, you need to construct a flow hydrograph... total flow versus time.  The slope of this is a measure of the flow that you can use to determine generation capacity.  The area of the space between the slope and the flow curve is a measure of the 'pondage' you require to maintain the flow.

cvg, I did send Mike Misslin a request for info. THKS!

cvg, does not seem that Mass DCR gives a darn about my E-mail.

RE: Hydro electric dam data

email may not be the best method, I would either make a phone call or show up in person.

RWF7437, I went to your site.  The book looks interesting however at this moment it is not what I am looking for.  The masonry dam that I am interested is low head and is already in existence.  I am trying to get its design data which I do not believe the owner would be willing to share. I tend to believe that there is some public record about it.

RE: Hydro electric dam data

Chicopee,

The details of the dam are probably a matter of public record so whether or not the Owner is willing to cooperate may not be fatal.

If you do very much of this kind of work the book may be a good addition to your library.

good luck

Thanks to all responders for your comments.  MA DCR helped me in my research.  In the event anyone whishes for info on dams, you'll need a FERC docket number which I got from MA DCR, then get to the FERC website and use their eLIBRARY.
