Nickel plating CA6NM

Would there be anything inherently wrong with nickel plating (electro or electroless) cast stainless steel such as CA6NM?  Any other suggestions with using nickel?

RE: Nickel plating CA6NM

Why do you need this for aesthetics? CA6NM is capable of protecting itself under normal environmental conditions.

I can be a challenge to get a good enough surface finish on a casting to make plating work well.  You need very clean surfaces in order to get good adhesion.

The casting does not meet dimensional conformance requirements, and I am looking for an alternative to chrome plating or welding.  The bores are out of tolerance so the chrome would be difficult due to the required grinding and tight space to do so.  The welding could warp the piece that has many extremely tight tolerances (~.0005).

RE: Nickel plating CA6NM

Hard chrome plating is the only option I know of. But then grinding of the bores will be a challenge. How can Ni plating avoid grinding. (I am just thinking loud). Can you please describe the part.

It is a pump housing, we are looking at both the bearing and rotor bores.  We can machine Ni plating without destroying the tools, whereas we have seen tools get destroyed from machining on chrome plating.

How about inserts?

RE: Nickel plating CA6NM

metengr, you snatched away my reply. Yes thatis a common way of fixing the issue. Alternately I was looking for a 3M product which can be applied cold on the surface and then machined. It does not get chipped off and is easily machined. Only issue will be color mismatch.
