Read FAQ798-1153: Design of a vapor-liquid separator drum (or knockout pot, or flash drum, or compressor suction drum) on this site for a detailed process design procedure.

RE: l will like to know the steps to follow in design a seperator
Step 1: Find an engineer that knows how to do this.
Step 2: Hire them
Step 3: Find a code shop that can follow instructions
Step 4: Commission them to build the vessel designed above.
Following the FAQ referenced above could result in a satisfactory vessel as long as you understand all the steps and all the ramifications of each choice. That might be a stretch.
I see a lot of two-phase vessels that are not fit for their design conditions. All built by code shops following cook book proceedures.

1. Design Horizontal Gravity Settlers
Hydrocarbon processing Sept 1977
2. Optimum design of horizontal liquid-vapor separators
Chemical engineering Nov 15, 1982
3. design two phase separators within right limits
Chemical engineering Oct 1993
For some rule of thumbs, I need to know if it is liq/liq or liq/vap.
