IRC 2006 703.7.2 help

(OP)
In the IRC 2006 R703.7.2 Exterior Veneer support, it states that if you support masonry veneers with wood or CFS beams/headers you have a deflection criteria of 1/600. My questions is at the begining of this section it states that this is valid except in Seismic Design Categories D0, D1, and D2. Does this mean that if i am in one of these SDC's I am not allowed to support masonry veneer with wood or CFS?

RE: IRC 2006 703.7.2 help

I am unfamiliar with the term "CFS".

Nevertheless, if it has the same characteristics of wood, specifically that of being more flexible, then I would answer your question as "yes".  Loss of rigidity of the support will cause the brick to crack and fail.

RE: IRC 2006 703.7.2 help

I'm guessing CFS means Cold Formed Steel

msq, I'm not sure of your meaning of the phrase "loss of rigidity...crack and fail." my expectation regarding the provision prohibiting use of wood and CFS in the spec'd SDC's would have to do with a life-safety concern, not necessarily brick cracking considerations.

Thoughts?

I agree that the provisions mean that in those SDC's, support with wood and CFS is prohibited.

RE: IRC 2006 703.7.2 help

Yes, that too, and ultimately, that was what I was alluding to.  Short of that though, the idea is to prevent the precurser to a possible loss of life, a localized failure.
