Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

(OP)
Hi,

I'm trying to close (with Close operator) the surfaces that were joined with JOIN operator, as I want to get a solid. And i'm not able to do so and gives the following error message "an opening in the seleted body can not be closed by one single planar face. Modify the part". What is this and why.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

Usually that means you have a gap in your surfaces.  During the join operation it should highlight any open edges with a thick green boundary, but you may have to zoom in to see it if it is a small area.  Try this, and try to check what might be problem areas.

You can also try to heal the surfaces instead of JOIN, and it will adjust the edges to close the volume, as you modify the parameters.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

As Albigger stated you should be able to see the gap during the join operation. If the topological tolerance is no issue and the gap is mall, you can tweek the mergin distance in the join operation.

You should be able to see the problem if you use boundary operation on the surface.

The other ways is to deform it so it closes with healing or patch it with fill operation.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

To add to the above, in GSD, turn datum on, create a new geometric set (for organization), create boundary and pick the join.  This will do 1 of 2 things.  If you get an error stating no boundary available you have a closed surface and can proceed to a solid.  If there are boundaries this will extract them. Right click over a boundary and select reframe.  close the gap by which ever means necessary.
Add new surfaces to join.

Repeat if necessary.

Derek

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

I have found that you can only create a solid if you remove the planar faces.

Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before resting before you get tired.

Hi,

Many thanks for your views. And I tried to fix the problem,
but not able to do so. I dont agree with Cadfish, as to remove the planar faces. Error message is '"an opening in the seleted body can not be closed by one single planar face. Modify the part". It does mean that, I think, Catia
can take care of closing the gaps if any planar faces required.
If I'm wrong, how to find these planar faces that are creating problem, so that I could delete them, to get the solid. At Present, Using the method suggested by DBezaire and Azrael. But then too, there were boundaries that I have filled with surf, but not working out...trying,,trying....
Any body has a good material of problems encounterd in surfacing and how to fix them....
Thanks

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

What license type do you have?   HD2, YM2.... or a list of modules you can access.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

one of the joyous things about iges & similar file type is that they can contain many more problems than just non-planar openings

Duplicate surfaces
Embeded surfaces
Self intersecting surfaces
Overlapping surfaces

If you have the healing assistant license use the connect checker in this to identify the problem surfaces. if you only have GS1 or better still GSD then use the surface & curve connect checker to try to identify the problems (its harder using these tool relative to the HA1 tools) also the boundary command can be useful for identfy holes

If only the bean counters saw the amount of time regulary spent fixing transfered files they would soon stop it or purchase the tools to speed up the fixing process.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

It is hard to say what is wrong. I believe a catia model will give all more clue.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

can you provide us with a sample file that we can see.

Sorry..I'm not supposed to give this data out.
But, Thanks for your effort.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

If you run the Boundry command under the Generative Shape Design work bench on the join surface it will tell you the body is closed if it is closed if not it should give you the boundry of where the join is open which will at least show you where the gap is so you could try to fix the part to get the close command to work.

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

When you create the JOIN, do you use the propagate option?
This might help you find where you have problem.

Sorry...i did this...it did not work out,,,Thanks

RE: Not able to convert Joined surfaces to Solid

go the hard way...

JOIN small amount of surfaces... time consuming but sometime the best way...then JOIn small JOIN into bigger one untill you have a close volume.
