Please help settle a dispute. Inside or out for dimensions

(OP)
Please help settle a dispute. Inside or outside for dimensions on stamped parts? Of course there are always special cases, but there is only one method that is not altered due to uncontrollable metal thickness variation. Weigh in everyone, give us your thoughts. Thanks.

RE: Please help settle a dispute. Inside or out for dimensions

The dimensioning strategy should reflect the end use of the part.

RE: Please help settle a dispute. Inside or out for dimensions

On a stamped radius WE prefer our customers to dimension the B/P to the ID.

Our customers on the otherhand likely use a dimensioning strategy like Greg says.

One way to assure the OD is what the B/P calls out is to coin the OD to fit. This may cause other problems however.

RE: Please help settle a dispute. Inside or out for dimensions

both interior and exterior dimensions should be used in the design process and taken into consideration when the whole thing is finalized.  This assumes that both the inside at the outside dimensions really matter, but it is useful even if they don't both matter because the inside and outside dimensions aid the production process by showing the next guy down the line roughly what the dies should be like for the stampings.

RE: Please help settle a dispute. Inside or out for dimensions

Out of my experiance its important where the contact surface is. Cause thats where you need the material in spec. Otherwise you might run out of spec caused by the material thinning. The CMM concept must accord to that too
and the same clamping points should be used for welding.

Any further question, please let me know.
