Shop Prep for Moment Connection C12 to C12

(OP)
Our typical shop preperation for a beam to beam moment weld is to bevel the flanges 30 degrees (60 degree total angle), cut the web on each member with a 1"x1" "APPLE", use a back up bar and weld it complete.

Can a moment connection be achieved the same way with a C12X20.7 to C12X20.7?  The problem I am having is the graduated thickness of the channel flange.  Will the weld thickness graduate 3/8" to 5/8"?

RE: Shop Prep for Moment Connection C12 to C12

Off the cuff, I believe you would have the same problem with an "S" section to.

If a full moment splice is required, then the full section of the flange muust be developed, tapered or not.
