Large Welded Pipe Yield Strength

Large Welded Pipe Yield Strength

Large Welded Pipe Yield Strength

(OP)
Hello,

I am trying to find out the yield strength of a 36" diameter pipe which will be welded together.  Any input or direction to a properties page would be helpful

RE: Large Welded Pipe Yield Strength

Typical steel used for these is A500 grade B (35ksi), although stronger steels are available..

We normally specify wall thickness of 3/8,1/2,5/8,3/4, or 1"

RE: Large Welded Pipe Yield Strength

Are there any markings on the pipe itself?

RE: Large Welded Pipe Yield Strength

The A500 spec does not continue to 36" diameter.  The usual spec for this size will probably be ASTM A252 Grade 2 or 3 (35, 45 ksi, respectively) for pipe piles or an API grade for line pipe.  The API line pipes come in many grades ranging from 35 to 70 ksi (ex. API 5L-X42 would be 42 ksi).  From what I am told, 42 ksi and stronger pipe is becoming much more common and easier to find than 35 ksi steel.

If this is existing, check it using 35 ksi.  If this works, great.  If not, you would probably be better off getting it tested, or providing reinforcement based on the assumption that it is 42 ksi than you would be to assume a higher strength.

RE: Large Welded Pipe Yield Strength

Sorry enginerding is right, A252 for larger poles. Still 35ksi.
