I have been trying to find information on materials selection for water treatment plants but have come up empty handed.  We have a hot lime softener in our water treatment plant and we need to specify the materials of construction for storage tanks for the following chemicals:

5-20% lime slurry
5-20% magox slurry (magnesium oxide)
5-20% soda ash solution

One vendor has offered carbon steel with 1/16" CA.  I have tried looking up calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, magnesium oxide and sodium carbonate and my corrosion tables do not have much useful information for carbon steel.  Can anyone offer suggestions for the materials, or tell me if carbon steel is good for these storage tanks?

I appreciate any help anyone can provide!

If you look at this paper, you will see that carbon steel will not significantly corrode when the solution pH is above 8.3. The pH of your solutions will all be elevated.

Years ago, carbon steel was the material of choice for industrial projects where these solution tanks were commonly used. It is probably more common to make these tanks of plastic today, because plastic tanks are readily available. You can use almost any type of plastic such as polyethylene or FRP. The choice of material will depend somewhat on the size of the tank.
