VCM Barge Unloading

VCM Barge Unloading

VCM Barge Unloading

(OP)
I am looking for proven methods for off-loading VCM from an inland barge (LPG barge used for VCM service, 12,000 bbl).  Compressors are typically used for rail cars, but seem undersized for a barge.  Barge company wants to use nitrogen, but that contaminates the VCM.  We are considering pumps, but that requires barge modifications.

What method(s) are typical for off-loading VCM from barges?

Thanks!

RE: VCM Barge Unloading

ffrey..

I "GOOGLED" VCM and Barge.....i was directed to a GREENPEACE website who had this explantion:

"Atofina, a subsidiary of the petrochemical giant TotalFinaElf, is better known for the explosion at their fertiliser plant in Tolouse one year ago, which killed 30 people and injured thousands. They are the largest PVC producers in France, which includes the manufacture of its "building block", vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) as well as toxic additives used for giving PVC different properties in the manufacturing process.

VCM is a carcinogenic and highly explosive gas which is carried in quantities of 2500 tonnes in a barge, three or four times a week along the Rhone river between Marseille and Lyon. These transports expose unaware communities along the river, with no proper safety legislation to protect them, and today we were determined to denounce this hazardous and irresponsible practice"

Now, as I understand it, you want suggestions from strangers, posted on an engineering bulletin board on the best method to transfer this stuff ??

Am I understanding this situation properly....???

My opinion only

RE: VCM Barge Unloading

I don't see why the compressors will not work, just get a bigger compressor or operate 2 or 3 of the typical units.

There may even be a combination.  Used the compressor that is high volume, low head to pressure the barge, and then pump it the rest of the way with a pump placed in a secondary contaiment location away from the water.
