Methods to measure Mg in compact graphite iron (CGI)

I am developing methods to measure Mg content in CGI (also known as vermicular cast iron).  I have been told that XRF is not a good way to measure Mg content due to inhomegenity of the samples.  What other measurement methods can be used?  I don't want to remelt samples because the Mg will burn out so a 'wet chemistry' method would be desirable.

Ask any supplier of optical emission spectrometer who can guide you in selecting a suitable equipment. Essentially difference between   CG iron and DI is the amount of  residual Mg content which gives different microstructures.

There is no need to remelt samples. You can chill cast your sample after Mg treatment to get good results using a OES.

I should clarify my earlier question.  The foundry that supplies the current CGI parts measures Mg by taking a sample from the melt and chill casting it then using OES to measure the composition.  I want to know how much Mg is in the product that is sent to my company and OES won't work due to the microstructure.

Atomic absorption spectrometer can be used for your samples drawn from the castings. Microstructure analysis coupled with mechanical testing should provide an indication about Mg content.
