Articulated stinger

Articulated stinger

Articulated stinger

(OP)
Hi,

Does anyone know how a articulated stinger work when installing pipeline?

I understand that it consist of more than one section. But does it mean that the stinger move during installation or is it fixed at certain angle?

Thks

RE: Articulated stinger

The stinger is fixed for a certain range of water depths and pipe weight such that a necessary pipe profile not overstressing the pipe during laying can be accomplished.  Normally that will entail only one stinger curvature, however it might need to change if water depth varies significantly.  The curvature of the stinger and consequently the depth the stinger projects below the laybarge can be controlled or adjusted if the stinger is articulated.  A very flat stinger profile is used for shallow water and large pipe diameters, but almost a 1/4 circle may be needed for very deep water or very flexible pipe.

RE: Articulated stinger

There are 2 types of articulated stingers - fixed and movable. The fixed type is with a pre-determined profile based on the pipelay analysis which depends on water depth, pipeline weight and avialable tensioner capacity. The stinger has a range of angle that can be set and so is the roller heights, the profile is set with the combination of stinger angle and roller heights. The profile can be set optimised for a range of water depths. The movable stinger is a pontoon in which the angle (within the range) can be varied by ballasting, but this type of stinger is difficult to operate.
