Natural Convection Heat Sink Analytical Model
Natural Convection Heat Sink Analytical Model
(OP)
I need to learn how to create an analytical model of plate fin natural convection heat sinks to estimate the thermal resistance from component to air.
I have had no luck searching for papers, texts or online guides. I have found several online calculators but I would like to create my own analytical model.
If anyone knows of papers, texts or online guides that may help then I would be grateful for the information.
Thanks.

This sort of model is pretty much in every heat transfer text.

IRstuff and bplwithu - I went through several heat transfer texts a while ago and don't remember seeing details about multi-finned heat sinks. I know there are models of natural convection over single vertical plates (as expected) but I am looking for something that brings together all the aspects of a multi-finned heat sink, including air flow effects.
Twoballcane - I need to analytically model the resistance from the back of the heat sink itself to the air.
Transient1 - I will take a look through the journals.

However, I think that you'll find that a purely analytical model is unachievable; there's a reason people created numerical analysis and FEA.

Thanks IRStuff, however I believe that it is definitely possible to create an analytical model that gives a fair estimation of the result. I have seen several calculators that use analytical models and have seen a method with critical equations missing. I am using computational numerical analysis however an analytical model will provide results a lot faster.

the textbook Heat and Mass Transfer, Yunus Cengel, Section 9-4 .... deals with exactly this topic, equations and an example.
the textbook Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer, Incroprera and Dewitt, Section 9.7.1 .... equations and examples.
