In-Context Parts Heads-Up
In-Context Parts Heads-Up
(OP)
I found this little gem out the hard way last week, so I thought I'd pass it on.
As you may or may not know, the in-context part feature in SW '08 has been totally changed in order to make room for the new Virtual Components options. In my opinion, this has made things a lot more complicated for little benefit. But that seems like how the story is going for this release. Check the What's New document and htt p://design smarter.ty pepad.com/ mikepucket t/2007/08/ whats-new- sw-20.html for some more general info.
OK, so in order to save time (and therefore money) I employ a number of little tricks to reduce mouse movement and overall number of clicks. As I said I've lost a little ground with this release, but I'm sure I'll find some new ways to make it up. Anyways, one of my time-savers is the "Create Sketch on New Part" option. Saves me a couple of clicks when I start new parts. This brings us to our in-context part fiasco.
When you create an in-context part in '08, the software automatically throws in a sketch on the plane that you select. However, if you have the (previously) time-saving sketch option checked SW throws in an empty sketch, and you will get the pop-up shown below. Before you select "Yes" be sure to say "Goodbye" to the assembly that you have been working on for 96 hours without saving and make certain there aren't any minors within earshot, because you are about to crash the program. If you select the "No" option you will have to exit out of the open sketch, delete it, and edit the empty sketch that is at the top of you FM tree. Real time-saver, eh? A lot more intuitive, too.
I've already put in the bug report. I just thought I'd pass this little gem on. I suffer so that you don't have to.

Looks like I'm getting my "live" presentation of 2008 at the ESPN Zone gig in Denver tonight (by MCAD--my new VAR)--gonna be there, Dan?
By the way, always save at 95 hours into a new assembly--never at 96 hours. It'll keep you smiling.
