Four-Stroke Propane ICE Design

Four-Stroke Propane ICE Design

Four-Stroke Propane ICE Design

(OP)
I am looking for books dedicated to the design of four-stroke internal combustion engines. I have so far been using Taylor's "Internal Combustion Engine in theory and Practice" and while it's a great resource, sometimes it lacks the engineering principles behind the design choices. If fellow engineers could let me know the resources they use for engine design I would be most appreciative.

Thanks,
Andrew Gordon
Mechanical Engineer

RE: Four-Stroke Propane ICE Design

Heywood is a good alternative/adjunct to Taylor. For crankshafts I couldn't find anything much, but if you want to get into torsonal vibrations in a big way then Kerr Wilson is a great intro.

For the top end I was mostly concerned with noise and vibration, so I used a variety of papers from ISVR and the IMechE.

Cheers

RE: Four-Stroke Propane ICE Design

Except for maybe the book Greg mentioned wich I haven't seen, there is no such book or books that I know of.

RE: Four-Stroke Propane ICE Design

I have to thank Greg for making me aware of Heywood's book. Just got a copy of it recently. Blair has several books also that may have what you are looking for. Haven't read Taylor yet. Would you recomend it?-------Phil

Thanks Greg, so far Heywood's book is very useful. Smokey, Taylor's book is useful. It's not complete, but still a great source for info. Worth the hundred or so dollars.

RE: Four-Stroke Propane ICE Design

The two best books have already been mentioned. Other than that, you would have to search the SAE papers written in the 1960s and earlier. You will need a wheelbarrow full of money and although there are some very good papers, a lot of them are not worth the paper they are printed on. Dig through the old NACA stuff. You can download them for free.
