I stumbled across the Wiki on "Lynch motor".  I won't attach or quote it, but I'm wondering what it really is that puts it in it's own classification.  At least other than the unique claims to be the next, greatest thing and is wonderful for E-vehicles.....

I believe it could accurately be described as an electronically commutated, salient pole, PMDC, but I know nothing about the electronic control.

Any insights or experiences?

RE: Lynch motor

I didn't get much beyond the first sentence on the Wikipedia page. It's a brushed DC motor. I can't imagine any serious player putting one in an E-vehicle. You've got the brush maintenance/replacement issue, and you are generating most of your heat in the rotor, where it's tough to get it out. (Many e-vehicle makers will use liquid cooling of the motor's stator to get a better continuous current rating, or looked at another way, to permit the use of a smaller, lighter motor.)

Yeah, brushed as opposed to electronically commutated.  I don't know why I zipped right past that.

I'm asking about them here because the intelligence and appropriate levels of skepticism in our MVPs might help shed some light on this.  I'm skeptical enough to distrust the company's marketing, and even question some aspects of the wiki.

Still, it's an odd and patented design, and there's an outfit that seems to be in business making them, and all applications slanted toward EVs.
