Dry Cleaner Boiler Room Wall Fire rating

Dry Cleaner Boiler Room Wall Fire rating

Dry Cleaner Boiler Room Wall Fire rating

(OP)
Hi,

What is the required wall fire rating for the boiler room of a dry cleaner shop?  How about the wall rating for the entire store.  I am working on the MEP for construction of a dry cleaner as a finishout inside of an existing shell building.  Shell building is brand new.  Has fire sprinkler also.

Thanks,

RE: Dry Cleaner Boiler Room Wall Fire rating

What area are you in?, different codes give different requirements. With the sprinklers, depending on the btu input of boiler,(probably fairly small) you may not need more than two layers of sheet rock up to the deck.

Any penetrations of that wall would need to have a UL assembly listing equal to the code requirement.

Whoever is doing the code review needs to determine the occupancy separation which is also a function of what kind of space is next to you.  There is generally both a smoke and fire requirement.

RE: Dry Cleaner Boiler Room Wall Fire rating

If the boiler operates at a pressure of > 15 PSIG and 10 HP, then either a 1-hour fire barrier or automatic sprinklers are required. See 2006 International Building Code Table 508.2 for incidental uses.

Your building is protected by an automatic sprinkler system. You should confirm that it complies with NFPA 13. If so, no separation is required.
