CIRCULAR REFERENCE

CIRCULAR REFERENCE

CIRCULAR REFERENCE

(OP)
I have a problem that I have never seen. I have an assembly that I copied with references, renamed and made some minor changes to. I then copied the original assembly drawing to a new location and changed the name. now I want to change the new(copied)drawing file references to the new assembly file. Sounds easy enough... but when I change references and open the file, it is still looking at the original assembly. I have tried this on 4 computers, and one of the computers will change the references, the rest will not. So I tried to change the references using Solidworks explorer. It produces an error code " the file 3811-350 upper die cannot be used as a replacement because it would create a circular reference." has anybody come across this before?

RE: CIRCULAR REFERENCE

Always use SW Explorer to rename files, not Windows Explorer. Open the file, change the "references" in the open window.

I did not use windows explorer. I know how to change references. the problem is, I can change the reference just like I have for years, but for some reason it ignores the new reference and uses the old reference. thread559-130458: Circular Reference Error had the same problem I am having, but I don't see where it was solved.

RE: CIRCULAR REFERENCE

Are your old assy and the new assy in the same directory?  If not, temporarily rename the old assy's directory.  When you open the new drawing, it will not find the old assy.

If the old assy is in the same directory, temporarily rename the old assy using windows explorer.  With this technique, the new drawing will not be able to find the old assy.

I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, BUT YOUR SUGGESTION IS A WAY AROUND IT. THANKS SHAGGY.

RE: CIRCULAR REFERENCE

The simplest way to do this now is to use Pack and Go. It can copy, rename and re-reference drawings all in one fell swoop.

cheers
