A question about forgings

A question about forgings

A question about forgings

(OP)

I need to use a forged nozzle, SA-350 LF2.
Due to time of delivery, I´ll purchase a forged piece, round to the external diameter of the nozzle, and drill a bore through it.
The vessel owner refused to accept this, stating that a self reinforced nozzle shall be forged like a flange, that is, to obtain peripherical fibers.

My question is, does this make sense?

SA-350 par. 5.3.3 reads: “ 5.3.3 Except for flanges of all types, hollow, cylindrically- shaped parts may be machined from rolled bar or seamless tubular materials provided that the axial length of the part is approximately parallel to the metal flow lines of the stock.”.
The vessel is designed per Sec 1, MDMT= -40, no fatigue.

RE: A question about forgings

FILGUEIRAS;
If you are using a forged round, not rolled bar, to fabricate a nozzle with reinforcement, I see no problem with what you are proposing.

RE: A question about forgings

FILGUERAS,
What you are describing is standard fabrication of similar, forged, self reinforcing nozzles. A forged weld neck flange might then be welded to the nozzle.

Thank you, fellows.

My opinion is really reinforced now :-)

RE: A question about forgings

I don't have Sec I, however Section VIII states in UG-14(b)...

"Except for flanges of all types, hollow cylindrically shaped parts (up to and including NPS4 (DN100)) may be machined from rolled or forged bar, provided that the axial length of the part is approximately parallel to the metal flow lines of the stock."

As long as your 4.50" or below, you'd be OK under Section VIII.

Maybe Section 1 has something similar???

RE: A question about forgings

You can use forged or hot-rolled bar over 4.5" diameter if you test in accordance with code case 2155 which requires mechanical testing in all three directions and ultrasonic testing along the entire length of the bar. It also requires that any weld preps are dye penned before welding.
