ASME B16.5 Flange Design cf ASME VIII div 1 App2
ASME B16.5 Flange Design cf ASME VIII div 1 App2
(OP)
When standard pipe flanges to B16.5 (or any other standard) are used as main girth flanges in a heat exchanger for example, how does one calculate the bolting moments to transfer to the tubeplate?
Although the pressure/temp rating is adequate for the service it is always difficult to prove the standard flanges to ASME VIII appendix 2, especially when you use gaskets such as Spiral wound with higher m & y values.
Does anyone have any guidance to how I should calculate the Mop and Matm values and what bolt stresses should be used, actual applied or code stress?
Many thanks in advance

If you must comply with App.2 I can't suggest any method other than making a special flange.

Besides, although I never calculated a ANSI flange with App. 2 I heard that some of them do no verify the stresses limits of the Code. May be now that these ones are higher than formerly, this problem does not ocurr anymore. But as you are in a heat exchanger and not in a piping problem, you can use narrower gaskets (as long as you comply with TEMA rules).
Hope this helps
