Welding rebar to structural steel

Welding rebar to structural steel

(OP)
I originally posted this in the welding forum, but haven't received any responses.  I hope this forum is more "well traveled."

When welding a #10 Grade 60 rebar to an A36 structural steel embed plate, which AWS certification is appropriate?

There has been contradictory opinion that it is either AWS D1.1 or AWS D1.4, heat the bar/don't heat the bar, use special filler metals/special fillers aren't required.

Help is appreciated, additional backup info will be provided as requested.

RE: Welding rebar to structural steel

My last foray into welding rebar to steel educated me:
1.  this is not a pre-qualified weld
2.  certified welder should demonstrate the exact weld
3.  pre-heat
4.  D1.4

RE: Welding rebar to structural steel

don't assign you best welder, get the lowest paid person.

dcasto,

With advice like that, suggest you cut your pay.

RE: Welding rebar to structural steel

For WPS and welder qualification D1.4 governs

Section 6 of D1.4 deals with qualification.

For WPS review D1.4 Sec 6.2

For welder qualification refer to D1.4 Section 6.3.

For preheat refer to D1.1 table 3.2 for the A36 and D1.4 table 5.2 for the rebar. The higher preheat governs

For filler metal selection refer to D1.1 Table 3.1 for the A36 plate and D1.4 Table 5.1 for the rebar. Lower strength low-hi electrode governs

RE: Welding rebar to structural steel

do such bars need to be low carbon (W stamped) or is billet steel acceptable? or are there certain allowances or additional requirements for using something other than low carbon steel? if you know the AWS section, i can look up the details...i've got the references but don't recall seeing the specifics about this and would like to be better informed for future reference. thanks.

RE: Welding rebar to structural steel

Usually specify A706 bars instead of A615 for welding rebar to plates.
