Electroless Nickel Plating or Coating?

Electroless Nickel Plating or Coating?

Electroless Nickel Plating or Coating?

(OP)
Is Electroless Nickel plating same as that of Electroless Nickel Coating?

Are ther international Standards (Like ASTM, AWS ANSI, MS SP) etc for Electroless Nickel Plating (Coating)?

RE: Electroless Nickel Plating or Coating?

bmoorthy,

AMS2404 is the spec. for electroless Ni.  There are variations to straight electroless Ni, low phosporus (AMS2405) and electroless Nickel-Boron (AMS2399).

What is the application that you are looking to use this on?

RE: Electroless Nickel Plating or Coating?

Somtimes coating is thicker than plating in common usage.

Plating should adhere to the substrate.  A coating may or may not adhere to the substrate.

RE: Electroless Nickel Plating or Coating?

ASTM B 733 is another specification for electroless (autocatalytic) nickel plating.  And the answer to your question is yes electroless nickel plating is the same as electroless nickel coating.  ASTM standards describe everything as a coating, even if it is a metallic plating.  Plating is more specific than coating.

RE: Electroless Nickel Plating or Coating?

You can also get the superseded standard, MIL-C-26074E COATINGS, ELECTROLESS NICKEL REQUIREMENTS FOR
"This specification covers the requirements for electroless (autocatalytic chemical reduction) deposition of nickel-phosphorous alloy coatings on metal and composite surfaces."
(still used by many platers) at

Note: The superseding standard, MIL-DTL-26074F (now MIL-DTL-32119), is controlled distribution only.
