2008 DVD or download 2008

2008 DVD or download 2008

(OP)
It's possible to download 2008 off SW website correct?  SW site is telling me my subscription isn't valid (I'll deal with that later).

If one can down load it is there any difference?  Reason I ask is our current machines don’t have DVD drives we're getting new machines beginning of next year so it's not practical to install DVD drives now or buy an external DVD drive.

thanks

RE: 2008 DVD or download 2008

The DVD install is better. If I remember correctly, you will have to re-install with the DVD anyway before applying any updates.

DVD drives are really cheap nowadays. If your company can't/won/t spring for a few, they are even cheaper. If you have SNL you only need one DVD drive to install on a server and make an admin image to distribute the install via the network.

cheers

Yeah we'll probaly buy an external drive and pass it around we have only 5 seats at this office.

What the benefits of using a SNL?  As of now we have SW installed on each machine which has it's own serial #.  Is SNL for really large companies?  We have about 15 seats total in 2 offices.

Thanks

RE: 2008 DVD or download 2008

You don't need an SNL license to install from admin image.

Just install the image to a server and you can run the installs from there. You can apply service packs to the image and update the clients as well.

SNL is just license hosting so you can install SolidWorks on more machines than you have licenses for. We have 25 licenses on SNL and have 100 people with SolidWorks installed. Most only use it occasionally so we never use up the 25 we have at any one time.

I believe you can upgrade your seats to SNL for a fee per seat.

Gildashard ... good point. My bad ... another seniors moment. sad

rockguy ... that is my understanding also. SW07 was the same. Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that a full uninstall and re-install was necessary.

cheers

Looks like an admin image is the way to go.

So we'll have some sort of "link" to click on and that will start installing from the image on the server?

That will still allow us to have our own settings and toolbars ect. on are individual machine?  Correct?

thanks again for the help.

RE: 2008 DVD or download 2008

If you did install SW08 from the DL you would have to install the DVD into the drive and update the install location. So if and when you do put a SP onto the machine it will ask you for the DVD and the Folder that was made when you launched the Download.
