API-5L Pipe Callout?
API-5L Pipe Callout?
(OP)
I have a question about an API-5L callout for pipe. "IF" I had an API-5L-X60 callout for pipe, am I correct that a number of ASTM materials "could" be suitable to use under this API-5L callout? The API-5L callout is just a specification (a requirement of materials to carry a given commodity at a given pressure/temp./tensile strength). And that under API-5L-X60 …ASTM A106-B, A53-B, & A139-B "could" be used under this API-5L listing?
My main question is that the API-5L is just a specification and NOT a material callout like an ASTM listing? I’m use to dealing with pipe under the ASTM designation, and am trying to understand what the API-5L is about. …THX!

RE: API-5L Pipe Callout?
So, in my opinion, the answer to your question is yes, tanking into account the above statement.

In ANSI B 31.3, they do not recognize anything X60 pipe and you'd have to use 35,000 psi yield in your calculations.
A lot of pipe is co-stamped API5L X42 and A106 Grade B.

PS - what I listed above is just an example of an API-5L callout.

RE: API-5L Pipe Callout?
IS the API-5L callout a material call out, where the properties & percentage of the components of the steel are listed? (Like an ASTM listing)
OR is the API-5L callout a piping specification, where it just lists the requirements of the pipe to carry a specific commodity under certain press/temp/yield strength? But does NOT point to any one type of steel?
...I do any better? *G*
RE: API-5L Pipe Callout?
ASTM A106 B or any other MATERIAL not meeting X60 should not be supplied or accepted if its yield is not at least 60 ksi.
