Create sheet metal using spline possible?

Create sheet metal using spline possible?

Create sheet metal using spline possible?

(OP)
I'm trying to create a sheet metal part out of a simple spline. I can't get it at all. Is there a trick? I've tried a 2d and 3d sketch and the closest I've gotten is 3d sketch and created a surface with it. It looks just like what I want the sheet metal part to look, except I need to be able to make a flat pattern with it.

RE: Create sheet metal using spline possible?

Try a lofted bend.

Even if SW would flatten it, the flat would be in accurate.  Be cautious about trusting flats of any non-gaussian surface from any CAD program.

RE: Create sheet metal using spline possible?

If the spline is creating a multi-axis curved surface, it will not be recognised as a SM part. The bend lines need to be straight. There are exceptions to that statement, such as the curved flange.

cheers

After reading these two replies, I feel dumb. I don't understand any of it. The lofted bend seems logical but for some reason does not work. I've tried recreating my spline with arcs with success (it's not a complicated spline) and still not working. I should maybe PrintScreen and show you guys so someone can help?

RE: Create sheet metal using spline possible?

To do the lofted bends, you need two separate sketches and they both have to be open.

ok I've done the lofted bends after jumping through some hoops. I imitated my spline by making a bunch of joined arcs, and had to make them tangent to each other. I copied it again and lofted them. im pretty disappointed that solidworks cant create a sheet metal part out of a simple spline.

Yes I stand corrected. Now that I've been messing with this I've got another one. It would be great if someone could solve this! Basically create a plane 20 degrees from another. Then make an arc in each about the same dimensions. Loft-bend in sheetmetal. It seems IMPOSSIBLE! Why??? It previews no problem which frustrates me even more, because it's showing the exact part I need. Any advice MUCH appreciated.
