"Bending" a flat 3D shape into a ring?

"Bending" a flat 3D shape into a ring?

(OP)
Is it possible to bend a 3D shape into a ring? For example, taking a flat bar with recessed graphics, and converting it into a ring. If this isn't possible with a 3D shape, is it possible to do it with a drawing? If it's not possible with solidworks, what other CAD programs can I do this with? Thanks.

Not sure if you can bend a 3D shape into a ring, but couldn't you wrap your text onto a ring?

You should be able to use the Flex function.

cheers

With sheet metal, you can make the ring, flatten it, add cuts, and bend into ring again.

The cuts can not be partial, they must go all the way through.  However, you may be able to fill the cuts in again after the ring is re-folded.

Brad,

As TheTick has indicated a partial cut will fail.  Depending on what you are trying to do you might be able to project your sketch onto the surface to make split lines and create separate surfaces.  I haven't tried this on a flat and then process into sheetmetal, but it should be worht a try.
