NFPA-704 diamond symbols on Storage Tanks

NFPA-704 diamond symbols on Storage Tanks

NFPA-704 diamond symbols on Storage Tanks

(OP)
to all,

NFPA - 704 has labeling requirements for storage tanks. (i.e. the commonly found "diamond" symbols)

What governing legal authority requires the use of such symbols ?Is it the local fire marshal or perhaps the insurance carrier ?

Is it necessary to place new NFPA-704 lables on older existing tanks that never required such labels ?

Anyone with experience in this area ?

normaly local ahj and yes we try to get older installations to add them, and can be required on existing

RE: NFPA-704 diamond symbols on Storage Tanks

Chapter 5 of NFPA 30 and IFC Chapter 27 grants the AHJ the authority to require NFPA 704 hazard diamonds be installed on aboveground storage tanks and buildings.

The requirement is a general provision in both documents so it can be required at anytime on any existing or new installation.
