Interference fit

Interference fit

Interference fit

(OP)
I have a need to get more opinions on fitting a shrink interference fit.

bore of roll sleeve is 5-14" Dia witha shaft interference fit of 0.005". I have to drive the shaft 10" into sleeve.

Roll is existing and lagged rubber covered.

Shaft is 4140 steel and sleeve is Cast iron.

How can I cool it easily and how much to be sure I get it right?

RE: Interference fit

The cheapest and simplest way that I adopt while cooling is to cover with huge blocks of ive for 24 hours and then progress with the fitment. This has worked all these years.

jlarocque;
I am a little confused by your post. What is a 5-14" diameter sleeve? What is the actual bore diameter of the sleeve over the 10" distance? What is the actual outer diameter of the shaft? You need to know these actual dimensions to decide if ice or more aggressive cooling, like dry ice or even liquid nitrogen is required to produce the necessary clearance for insertion. You only have one shot at this because if you don't have enough clearance, you will have problems.

5.25 shaft size at 5 thou interference

I know I am doing calculations at the moment but we do heat 99% of the time. since ther is a rubber cover on the roll I do not want to take any chances. I may have acces to liquid nitrogen.

Shaft size and bore is not detailed enough from my client I am assuming straight bore of 5.20" and shaft of 5.25" (for now.

Thinking of alternatives ways too!

But like you say I only have one "cheap" and "easy" shot at it! Otherwise I will pay to get the job finished :S

Thanks

JL
