This is fantastic, finally I have justification for being my normal self in the office......

I can now call everyone by the names I use for them in my head. No longer can my boss complain that I have a problem with my language, I'm doing doing it for clinical reasons. YEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let us know how that turns out for you.  There are probably really good soup kitchens where you live, and the Maytag boxes make the best housing.

Swearing is such a funny thing.  If you watch US TV they can kill, maim , torture, philander, get naked, sex at tea time, you name it.  But swearing whilst doing any of these things is trictly taboo.  So when Bruce Willis kills the bad guys, he yells things like "eat lead money funsters".  Killing & violence good; swearing bad.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

Hmm, maybe that explains why I could put up with my last job!

I have worked for a manufacturing company, very little open cussing, but  stress-free.  I have worked for a medical device company, no cussing, high stress.  I work for a military contractor, open cussing, some stress.

I think it all depends on the industry, what is acceptable and what isn't, and the scope of your work. I prefer the open cussing, "Tell me how you really feel?"

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

No, no, on US TV, at least broadcast network TV (where the FCC rules on swearing come into play), they can kill, maim, torture, philander, and have sex at tea time, but they can neither swear NOR get naked during any of the above activities.  Violence is fine; breasts are Harmful To Our Society.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

If a "swear word" is used too many times, it usually starts to lose its "tabooness" and "shock value", to the point it becomes main stream. That's why new swear words keep croping up. Otherwise, we would be still swearing like its 1199.

But there are certain classics.  A certain Anglo Saxon term has stood the test of time for 1000 + yearswinky smile.

I have been in situations where that particular word was used almost as a type of punctuation, however I'm not sure it really lost its impact.

(Kevin, behave yourself winky smile)

The "good" swear words can be used as any form; adjective, verb, noun, etc.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

KENAT--in those situations, though, it has lost its impact.  It's all about context.

So when are we going to get our next Really Bad Word?

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

Not quite, there was a distinction between when it was used as punctuation and when it was used as an expletive/insult.

Hang around the teenage kids of some dock workers from Southampton long enough and you'll learn what I mean.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

I know exactly what you're talking about--(a) I hang around the Irish (b) I pretty much talk like that too.  And when it's about as common as "um", it's lost its impact.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

Ah, the Irish.  Are you sure they aren't saying Feck.  It's a different word, no where near as bad.

('least that's what my Irish Brother in law taught me when I was a kid)

I still maintain that there was a distinction between when it was actually meant as an expletive/insult etc and when it was being used instead of um, ahh etc.

Don't get me wrong, they probably were less offended by being told to _ off than the local vicar would be but none the less, different to saying "I'm off down the _ing pub for a _ing ping".

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

I definitely agree, they are just words after all, there is nothing intrinsically offensive about them, it is all about context.
With a little more imagination, you can be just as insulting without swearing.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

KENAT, I forget, which feckin Irish mayor was it who was trying to explain that very distinction?

But no, I can hear the difference.

What?  I meant "_ing pint".

Wasn't one of Atomic Kitten caught in the same problem.  She said feck live on kids TV as I recall.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

There is a great line in a movie that goes.

"You know that you can only say the F-word once in a movie before you get a R rating?"

"Really, you know what I say... f$%k that."

The funny part is that they only swear the one time, and they maintained their PG-13 rating.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

ROTFL about "...sex at tea time" and "..eat lead money funsters"

I'm gonna email that article to my boss.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

I like it when a car mechanic here in the UK explains what's wrong with your vehicle:

"The ****ing ****er's ****ed".  Now that is a versatile word.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

I hate to think how feckless my speech would sound if I couldn't use mild expletives for emphasis.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

Do you mean feckless as in feeble or ineffective, or describing an absence of the word 'feck'?

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

yes, either way.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

I think I would shoot myself. I work with one guy in my office that swears like a 10 yr old, he doesn’t use the words appropriately and it’s just annoying. I could not imagine working in an office with a bunch of people swearing like 10yrs.  Someone that is good at using all the parts of speech with one word people respect for their understanding of the English language; as people have used the examples of car mechanics.  Two of the machinists here can really emphasize particular portions (and mistakes) of our products with frequent ****ing, ****er, and it works really well and I don’t mind.   I do not claim to be a master for the English language so I only use words that I know work in particular situations, but it’s just tacky to hear someone butcher such an art form.

I think because of the lack of swearing in American TV/movies this is part of the reason American English is not used to its fullest extent, and is a dying art; it is such a shame.

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

I have several American cousins, and a couple of years ago when we took one of them out to a pub with my brothers and a few mates. Towards the end of the session they were overheard saying "man, you guys (the British) are years ahead of us (Americans) at swearing"

RE: Why I love research budgets (more correctly f^&king research budgets)

Your cousins have obviously never been to Boston.

Perhaps not, but I have, but then I may not have been to the right parts. I'm guessing you fellas have never been to the Rhondda. Now there's a place that knows how to swear.
