need help solidworks cutout

Hi,
I started learning solidworks (2007) recently, but having trouble selecting a plane to sketch a cutout on the outside of a cilinder, i think that i need to offset from surface? and than give depth dimensions,(offset from)?
A picture to explane

RE: need help solidworks cutout
You could also create a plane normal to the curve of the cylinder and cut from there.
There are always a multitude of ways to get to what you want in SolidWorks.

Thanks for your reply,
Can you guide me step by step?
Open part/select extruded cut/select plane? (witch plane? how?)
Because of the location of the origin in the part that i have open, any plane that I can select will lie in the center of my part.
In my picture you can see that the cutout is going from de surface (10mm deep)into the cilinder.
You could also create a plane normal to the curve of the cylinder and cut from there.
Please explain how,
Do I start in the editing part mode and use the extruded cut button? and sketch from there? Because I get a error telling me to select a plane I must doing something wrong!
Or do I use the sketch or 3D sketch mode?
Thanks,

select the plane that is parallel to the axis of the cylinder. Hold down the ctrl key and drag the plane. Set the distance to 1/2 the outer diameter.
To create an offset cut:
Create the sketch on the plane that is parallel to the axis. When the Cut-Extrude dialogue box pops up, select 'Offset' in the 'From' box, set the distance to 1/2 the outer diameter. Then select your cut depth as you normally would.
Beyond all this, have you gone through the tutorials and/or received any training? If not, you should. It will help you out a lot.

Has your company set you up for training? Can you go to your VAR for training?
Or are you learning from home?

RE: need help solidworks cutout
This was exactly what i needed to know!!
I am a Toolmaker in the conventional way, no CNC machine, but find cad/cam a good help to design parts before making an attempt to manufacture.
So a few years back I met a friend who was working with solid edge V16, when he got a newer version of SE, I got the opportunity to work with the old version.
In a small (conventional) toolmaker shop, there is just not enough income to invest in cad cam training, so I did the tutorials, bought a book, visit some forums and thought myself what I needed to do my work.
My friend has CNC machinery, and he fabricated some work I made up in solid edge successfully.
During my time working with solid edge I was searching the internet for tutorials and tips, and found many interesting topics about solidworks.
My friend however was moved to another country, so when I spoke him on the phone and told him about solidworks, he told me that he was already working with solidworks, and as soon as he was upgrading to a newer version, I can use his older version again.
Being familiar with solid edge and thinking that solidworks was almost the same made me forget to do all the tutorials and started immediately, resulting in my questions.
I have searched the help section and the tutorials but might have overseen the answers.
I have to tell you that I speak & read English but find it difficult to understand the more technical descriptions in the help section & some of the tutorials, with the result not able to finish the tutorial.
Sometimes I follow the tutorials step by step and still not able to finish, resulting in frustration, finding out later thru the forums, that I need to adjust my settings somewhere!!
Thanks to everybody for their effort to help me.
Greetings,
Toolmaker

A friendly FYI ... SolidWorks does not sell its software. It merely sells/leases a license to use the software, and licenses are transferred to newer versions when they are installed.
So although the version you are using may not be ripped-off (in the usual sense), the fact that its license is not current makes your use of it illegal. You would be wise to not advertise that you are using it. You should perhaps, also inform your friend.

I have just contacted the distributor and they are going to sent me the latest trial version, and they have a training day coming up for which I am invited. after that I can see what is best in my situation.
