Tests on Electric Motor

Tests on Electric Motor

Tests on Electric Motor

(OP)
Hi all!

Customer wants to test his motors.
He want Polarization Index, Hi-Pot and Surge Test.

I'm familiar with the 2 first test but what is a surge test?
He wants it to be done at 2,2 kV. What are the expected results ?

Thanks

RE: Tests on Electric Motor

It is a test where you apply a high-voltage surge to the windings and look at the response on a scope screen. It is an effective way to find hidden defects, like shorted turns etc in the windings. If all traces look the same, you usually don't have a problem.

Baker is (one of the existing) manufacturers.

unclebob,

This might help:  http://www.bakerinst.com/BakerWeb/PDF_Files/Benefits_of_Surge_and_Hipot_testing_of_Electric_Motors.pdf

Essentially, all three legs of a 3 phase motor should have identical induction character.  A surge test "rings" (pulses) each circuit path, and compares the decaying waveforms, superimposed.  They should have relatively high congruence.  If not, there is likely a turn-to-turn short that will cause failure later.

RE: Tests on Electric Motor

The test is described in IEEE522.

Like the hi-pot, the surge test is potentially destructive, so you need a qualified person to perform the test and full agreement on the test voltages before you test it.

RE: Tests on Electric Motor

In addition to baker, PJ electronics makes surge testers. You might find more info on one of these test equipment manufacturer's sites.

RE: Tests on Electric Motor

If your customer is asking for it then and specifying the test voltage, then there should be no issues. The problem i see with this test is that it is not qualitative - if a winding is old it will finish it off - the motor either passes and goes back into service, or fails and needs serious repair.

This is good if the machine is critical but if it is a non-critical machine that won't cause a process to stop if it fails (ie of you have redundancy) the I believe the test is not necessary.
