RE: Solid Edge or SolidWorks
With a loaded question like that, this thread is just going to turn into a "My CAD package is better than your CAD package" disaster.
To answer your question, each CAD package has their strengths and weaknesses. Each mid-range CAD package is thwart with bugs that drive the user mad and several work-arounds.
Here is what I would do when looking for a CAD package.
(0) Plan on spending months selecting the software.
(1) Look through current designs created by your current CAD package. Pick out some particularly difficult ones to try on the new CAD package.
(2) Bring in one CAD representative at a time. Tell them to skip their demo and try the examples you picked out. Have them leave a 30 day demo version of their software for you to try to create the examples you picked out. The point is to make the CAD package look as close to the originals as possible. Remember that it is not possible to get them to look exact, but you want to be able to match your standard.
(3) Analyze the final product and how long it took the brand new user to create it.
(4) Buy CAD package.
