Shear Wall with Opening

Shear Wall with Opening

Shear Wall with Opening

(OP)
Hello,

Existing Single story Concrete shear wall is 80'-0" Long and 36'-0" High. Now we need to add 12'-0"x12'-0" Opening in to this existing wall.
I am looking for any referances/thoughts on how to analysis it.
I am thinking to provide steel tube frame (Col-Beam) around the new opening.
Your help is greatly appreciated!!

Regards,

AbhijitM

RE: Shear Wall with Opening

Steel tubes are normal.  With the length of the shear wall, lateral shear should not be of much concern.  The main problem will be resisting wind and seismic forces normal to the wall, which the tubes should resist.

RE: Shear Wall with Opening

You also need to consider the moment in the tubing that will be generated due to lateral loads.

RE: Shear Wall with Opening

You need to consider 2 types of bending stresses.

1. the overall cantilver bending of the wall, and
2. the shear beanding at the opening(fixed one end and fixed roller the other).

Have you considered vertical load transfer to the supports?

RE: Shear Wall with Opening

A good solution can be the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) for the strengthening.

RE: Shear Wall with Opening

Tubes are typical, as Mike stated.  Note you'll have to check the footings under the tubes also.  These may require a little enlarging under the concentrated load.
