Laser Welding

(OP)
Have started new job involving Laser Welding for medical devices. Welding 2 hdpe tubing onto cathether shafts. From a polymer point of view, what would be the most critical factors effecting the weld?

Thank you
Lj

RE: Laser Welding

Controlling the energy absorption so that the appropriate material melts enough to go tacky, but not enough to fall away or degrade and burn.

RE: Laser Welding

Thank you patprimmer,
the welder spin the catheter shaft while the laser beam welds the compontents together. Our process is operating within spec but we get rejects still. Both under and over welds. I noticed our shafts are not straight and slightly bent, and wobble when being rotated. I thinking the straight of the shaft is a factor which could be causing weld issues? Do you have an opinion on this?

Thanks again for your help
Lj
