Stud shear strength

Stud shear strength

Stud shear strength

(OP)
Hello,

I'm looking to solve an internal shear strength problem.  I have 1/4-20 all thread stud inserted into a cast aluminum part.  I can calculate the shear strength of the aluminum.  What I need is a website, book, anything that I can give to my boss that can explain the facts on course thread fastener failures.

Anybody have any ideas????

Thank you.  Next, is there any reference, test..etc.. that will show performance of stud materials threaded into different female materials?

Thanks again.

RE: Stud shear strength

Check out Machineries Handbook for section
"Bolts and Nuts".  Material Strength is
valid for any material.  You have to evaluate
internal threads as well as external threads.
They list length of engagement formulas and
I think that is what you want.
HDS Handbook for Threads is a good reference too.

RE: Stud shear strength

VDI 2230 and its references provide equations, tables, and test results.

Cory

RE: Stud shear strength

If you have more than 2 diameters of good thread engagment the fastener will likely fail first under tension loading.
1/4-20 is about the weakest thread , size-for-size, since the threads are relatively deep.

Be sure to check some of the posts on proper torque to reduce fatigue and loosening concerns
