Axial expansion of Stainless Steel Tubing
Axial expansion of Stainless Steel Tubing
(OP)
I would like to know how much axial expansion (inches or mm) that I can expect from 12" dia. schedule 40, 304 and 316 Stainless steel tubing when continuously exposed to 210F. Could I get a formula?

RE: Axial expansion of Stainless Steel Tubing
length * coeff of linear expansion of steel * temp change =
change in length.
temp change is the difference between normal room temperature and the temperature your tubes working at.
In degrees centigrade the expansion for a metre length will be:-
1m * 12 * 10^-6 * (99-20)= 9.48 * 10^-4 or 0.948mm

RE: Axial expansion of Stainless Steel Tubing
There are very useful tables on the expansion of SS,CS and other materials in the Appendices to ASME B31.1 and B31.3
Excellent reference....
